in at least 100 words, explain whose hidden agenda led giles to be crushed to death with stones.

Putnam wanted more land to gain more power, thus he aimed to take Corey Giles’ land. To do that, he had to charge Giles with heresy that would cost him his land and property. When his family was accused with witchcraft, Giles refused to say or confess anything because by doing so, he knew he would be hanged. Giles protected his land from the hands of Putnam until the end and kept his Christian dignity. He even bravely said his last words, “more weight”, in front of the court to show his invincible spirit. In the end, the schemer Putnam was not able to get hold of any of Giles’ properties. 

In Crucible Act IV, Giles Corey is crushed to death with stones because of the hidden agenda of Thomas Putnam.

Explanation:

Thomas Putnam holds a grudge against Francis, the Nurse who prevented his brother from being elected for the minister office. Hence, he became evil and started witch trials by accusing people of performing witch craft. Thus, Thomas tend to increase his own wealth by buying up the land of accused. Giles Corey is a noble character who was also intrigued by the witch craft stories circulating in the town. However, when his own wife Martha Corey was arrested for witch craft just because of her reading habit, he went to Court to tell Danforth about this deception. Giles also realized that Thomas Putnam is behind this deception as he wanted to usurp the property they have fought for many years. Giles was tortured but he remain strong and never confessed to witchcraft. Giles stand with the truth and gave his life for a noble cause in times when people lie to save their own skin.
