Holling is sure that Mrs. Baker doesn't like him after he goes to school and she calls his name, realizing he is not like other kids. He tells his family, but they ignore his worries. The next day, he feels like Mrs. Baker did something to his desk so he asks a fellow student, Meryl Lee, to check for him, but it results in her getting mad. At recess, he is forced to play soccer and trips Doug Swieteck's brother. He will be back at school in ten days. An announcement comes later that Mrs. Baker's husband, Tybalt Baker, would be brought to Vietnam soon.
