There are approximately 1,000 stars within 55 light-years of the sun. About 950 of them are smaller and
much dimmer than the sun. That means the sun is not really an average star, since it is larger and brighter
than 95 percent of the stars in our neighbourhood. Faint stars called red dwarfs are average stars. The
dimmest known red dwarf star, LHS 2924, shines so feebly that if it were to replace our sun, daylight on
Earth would be no brighter than a night with a full moon.
