In the wake of World War II, Gunter’s family was among those who received one of the original CARE Packages sent by Americans to families on the brink of starvation in Europe. CARE asked Gunter and a handful of other original CARE Package recipients who have re-settled in America if they would be willing to write a letter to Syrian refugee children. Gunter jumped at the chance to pay it forward, describing for Zaher not only the tough times but also how he endured and came out the other side to live a happy life. “Not a single day went by when I wasn‘t hungry,” Gunter wrote, detailing how his family fled their home in East Prussia in an unsuccessful attempt to evade the advancing Russian army. “To help my family I went begging for bread at Russian-occupied houses.”

On a recent afternoon in his Chicago apartment, Gunter placed the letter on the table next to him, raised his tall frame from his chair and grabbed a creaseless page of white paper. He began folding it. Amid so many hardships, Gunter said, he found joy in the simplest things. That’s when he developed a passion for paper airplanes. He has made them ever since, for his own two sons (now in their 30s) and the children of others’.
