Read It! The Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway stretches along the southeast coast. One of the routes built along the
waterway was the Albemarle and Chesapeake Canal. At first, the water in this canal was not deep enough for
large ships. Soil and fallen trees had to be removed. Steam dredgers were used to dig out the bottom of the
canal. This made the water deep enough for the larger ships. Shipping traffic increased in the canal once larger
ships could pass safely.
