Amelia Earhart (1897-1937) A tomboy as a girl, Amelia Earhart found many ways to experience her love of adventure in her adult life. A famous pilot, Earhart was the first woman to fly across the Atlantic Ocean, and the first to fly solo across the Pacific Ocean. Elizabeth Blackwell (1821-1910) After moving with her family from England at age 11, Elizabeth Blackwell became the first woman in America to be awarded an M. D.—a medical doctor’s license. She was also active in anti-slavery and women’s rights movements.
