The 1619 Project is a project developed by The New York Times and the Pulitzer Center to tell the story
of the United States beginning in the year 1619,
when the first ship carrying people from Africa who
had been enslaved arrived on U. S. soil. In the
project's flagship essay, Nikole Hannah-Jones lays
bare the oppression Black people have faced in the
400 years since being brought to America. The
history of the United States looks different when
told from the perspective of those denied what
should be the most basic, universal rights.
