Read It! Landing on St. Vincent, an island in the Caribbean Sea, Europeans discovered a strange phenomenon. The
women on the island spoke one language, but the men spoke another. Originally, the people of St. Vincent spoke
Arawak. When their island was attacked by the Caribs, the men were killed, leaving the women to carry on the
Arawak language. So the women continued to speak their native language, and the conquering men continued to
speak Carib. Today the Arawakan language is thought to have evolved into Arifuna, which is still spoken on St.
