The Discovery of the South Sea by Beatrice Wallace In 1513, Vasco Nunez de Balboa was the first known European to view the Pacific Ocean from the Americas. A Spaniard, Balboa traveled
extensively, settling in places like Cartagena and the island of Hispaniola. In 1510, he settled in the colony of Santa Maria de la Antigua, which
is now the country of Panama. During this time, the king of Spain named Balboa Interim Governor and then promoted him to Supreme
Commander. Soon after this promotion, Balboa was charged with trespassing. Fearing punishment from the government, Balboa planned an
exploration that would get him out of the area, allowing him to avoid conviction for his purported crimes. A few months later, Balboa and a
team of hundreds of Spaniards and Native Americans left the colony in search of riches and a mysterious sea. The group journeyed through
difficult terrain and harsh conditions. Balboa's expedition finally reached what he called the "South Sea", or Pacific Ocean, on September 29,
1513. He gained much popularity for this discovery. Unfortunately, in 1519, he was found guilty of treason and disobedience after a friend
betrayed him and framed him for the crime.
