4. Part of learning how to be a good writer is in learning to assess your own work and the work of others. So, in an effort to practice this skill, please choose one of your favorite works of fiction
and evaluate how successfully the author was able to weave the theme through the story. Did
the author utilize any of the following to weave in the theme: character actions, symbolic
environment, repeating ideas, highlighting symbols, or contrasting values?
5. At the end of the unit, it is stated that: "Through writing, your voice, yes, yours, will resonate
through into the larger world and possibly change the existing reality, as a result. That my friend,
is a powerful gift and one that deserves the utmost respect and concentration. Please describe
a piece of writing that you have read that has been so powerful it changed your reality, on
someone's reality that you know. What made the writing so powerful? How did it change
your/another's reality?

Read the selection below and answer the question. an open boat by alfred noyes o, what is that whimpering there in the darkness? 

 'let him lie in my arms. he is breathing, i know.
 look. i'll wrap all my hair round his neck' – the sea's rising,
 the boat must be lightened. he's dead. he must go.' 


 see - quick - by that flash, where the bitter foam tosses, 
 the cloud of white faces, in the black open boat, 
 and the wild pleading woman that clasps her dead lover 
 and wraps her loose hair round his breast and his throat.
 'come, lady, he's dead.' - 'no, i feel his heart beating,
 he's living, i know. but he's numbed with the cold. 
 see, i'm wrapping my hair all around him to warm him.' -
- 'no. we can't keep the dead, dear. come, loosen your hold.

 'come. loosen your fingers.' - 'o god, let me keep him! ' -
 o, hide it, black night! let the winds have their way! 
 and there are no voices or ghosts from that darkness, 
 to fret the bare seas at the breaking of day. the imagery and word choice in the second stanza creates a tone of liveliness and joy danger and gloom silence and peace anger and hostility

In the poem "we wear the mask," paul laurence dunbar voices his repressed anger and frustration toward american society. he repeats the title phrase three times in the poem, using the words mask and we to show that the first use of the phrase is matter-of-fact. in the second stanza, the statement is followed by a period, which shows resignation. however, at the end of the poem, dunbar almost shouts the phrase defiantly. the mask seems to become something he wears proudly. through this gradual emphasis on the phrase, dunbar could be implying that
