So, when she heard about the theft, Paula rushed to be the first to cover the story. And the first two people Paula spoke to were William Bell and Molly Foster, chief of the Edgerton Police Department. She met them at the Bell Gallery. The scene was tense and confusing. People rushed about, trying to talk with anyone who might have information. People spoke loudly over each other, vying for information. Paula had to fight her way to speak with the victim of the crime.

“Can you describe what happened?” Paula asked Bell.

Bell, a thin man with blue eyes and a bald head, nodded gravely. He said, “I woke up early, so I was coming up the sidewalk at about 6:30. That’s when I saw shattered glass everywhere in front of the gallery.”

“From the broken window,” Chief Foster added, pointing to the front of the gallery, where the glass had yet to be replaced.

“Right,” Bell said. “So I hurried in. I rushed to the case, you know, where the topaz heart was on display. But…”

“It was gone,” Chief Foster said, finishing Bell’s thought. “So he called us.”

Paula took some notes. Then she thanked Bell and Foster for speaking with her and stood to leave. Bell said it was a shame that the topaz heart wouldn’t be there to attract visitors to Edgerton anymore. Paula agreed.

“I visited this gallery a lot when I was young,” she said. “I loved how the light bounced off the topaz. It was beautiful. It’s too bad my daughter may not get to see it herself.”

Paula walked to the door. Before she left the gallery, though, she stopped. She scratched her chin.

“One more thing,” she began. “The topaz heart was insured, right?”

Bell cocked his head to one side. He looked like the thought had never occurred to him. He said, “Of course.”
