From In My Youth by James Baldwin It must have been the cow bell that woke me. I rubbed my eyes, sat up, and in a dazed bewildered way, looked around. It was broad daylight-yes, the sun was at least an hour high. Some robins were singing in the trees by the roadside; a quail was whistling his bob-white from the topmost rail of the fence; and, at no great distance, hens were cackling, roosters crowing, ducks quacking. The air was filled with the merry sounds of the morning. There was something familiar in the appearance of the landscape; it seemed as if I had been on that very spot at some previous time, and yet there was a strangeness about everything which perplexed me not a little.
