Alarm on Metro Pollution
Since vehicular emissions are the bending cause of the poliction in Metro Manila, it is logical
to concentrate the efforts against air pollution in the apprehension of the violators of the Clean
Air Act. ABS-CBN's Bantay Usok, which allows the public to report offenders through text
messaging, has already taken up this cause.
The government and other environmental groups should also come up with ways to
supplement Bantay Usok campaign. They should consider the feasibility of providing
assistance to public utility vehicle drivers and operators in maintaining the engines of their
vehicles to fight air pollution at its source. Along with this are an organized monitoring system
and the setting up of accredited machine shops for private vehicle owners. An increased
effort
from the government and non-goverment groups and increased public awareness and support
will reduce the number of smoke-belching vehicles and hence prevent the level of worsening
air pollution
