O 1. by showing how hard it is to gain access to
underwater sites
Mere are several questions about this passage.
It's not unusual for a new city to be built on top of an ancient one, and
many remnants of ancient Alexandria are buried beneath the modern city. In
addition, a huge part of ancient Alexandria lies in the harbor, underneath the
waves of the Mediterranean Sea. These remains, called artifacts, tell
archaeologists a great deal about ancient life, but access is problematic. The
archaeologists must be capable divers. Sediment may cloud the water, while
sand and other debris cover the artifacts. Stone blocks, columns, and statues
are strewn haphazardly across about five acres of seabed.
The first thing archaeologists do when they study a site is make a map
showing the location of each artifact. In this case, archaeologists worked with
surveyors, who were standing on shore using global positioning systems.
Divers used waterproof paper and pencils to diagram their finds. A computer
program sorted the information, producing a detailed map before any artifacts
were moved
Because of the immense sizes of the artifacts, lifting them from the seabed
is complicated and dangerous. Imagine lifting a statue the size and weight of a
school bus. Divers first attach large deflated balloons to the artifact and then
inflate the balloons with compressed air. The balloons raise the artifact to the
surface of the water, where a boat-mounted crane lifts the artifact and sets it
onto another boat, all while both boats toss in the waves. Any misjudgment
can send the artifact crashing back into the sea, possibly injuring the divers or
damaging the artifact
Once the artifacts reach dry land, they must be desalinated, or cleaned of
salt that has soaked into the stone. Workers put the artifacts into huge tanks of
salt water. They replace the water weekly with water that is incrementally less
2. by providing readers with a familiar concept to
use as a comparison
03. by telling readers about a personal experience
of raising an artifact from the sea
O 4. by giving an example of something that can be
easily moved with modern technology
