What graphic organizer might be helpful in understanding this passage? Unfortunately, the United States has been lagging behind Europe in making alternative transportation an attractive option. Cities and suburbs are spread out, bike parking is far less common, and most bike paths are recreational paths that go along rivers or through parks, not functional paths that take riders to businesses and workplaces. The one area in which the U. S. outstrips Europe’s transportation efforts is in the number of buses and trains that allow riders to bring bikes aboard.
There is one exception: Portland, Oregon. Portland is a model bike city in the U. S., putting into practice many of the same ideas that Denmark, Germany, and the Netherlands have used. And they are succeeding in Portland—in a big way. From 1991 to 2008, Portland managed to more than triple the number of bike trips taken in the city.
For the United States to get serious about alternative transportation and solving the transportation crisis, many more cities will need to adopt the strategies that have been so successful in Portland and Europe. City by city, we can make a huge difference. Will your city be next? Think about how you, too, can get involved and be part of something big

Which is the best paraphrase of the text? the capability of a bicycle makes some people want to go very fast and others to go very slow. as long as you are careful, feel free to ride like the wind. when feeling brave on a bicycle you should ride fast, but when feeling afraid riding slow is wise. if you are unable to coast, it is pointless to even ride. if you’re going to ride a bicycle, you should throw caution to the wind and take over the road, swerving where you like and taking full advantage of your ride. it’s a real joy to be able to ride a bicycle, where you have the choice of going as fast or as slow as you like, using as much courage as you feel like using.

Read the excerpt from "home front diary." jimmy simmons stopped by today to tell me that he had enlisted in the army. he asked me if i would write to him, and i said i would. i told him that i've been writing to my uncle arthur and susan's cousin john for about a year, and as an experienced correspondent i had some advice about all the censorship. "don't write down any information about your location or the number of soldiers in your unit because the censors will cut all of that away," i said. "in my experience, loose lips not only sink ships, they make letters look like snowflake decorations! ” well, he belly laughed over that one. how is the author's perspective different from jimmy's? the author has been to war and she can give jimmy advice. jimmy has become a soldier and does not believe the author’s advice. the author has experience writing to soldiers but jimmy does not. jimmy has more experience at letter writing than the author.
