This type of inaccuracy is common in the work of Poe, who was, precisely, a Gothic author. This inaccuracy occurs, due to the fact that, since the beginning of the story, it is clear to the reader that the protagonist of the story is completely unstable and bordering on madness. This shows the reader that none of the acts that this protagonist will do will, in fact, be good, but rather terrible and unbalanced like his mental state. It also does not make you suspicious about whether the character will recover or change the depressing situation in which he lives, because the reader already knows that the character will get worse and worse.
