The following excerpt from Harriet Ann Jacobs's Incidents
in the Life of a Slave Girl chronicles her time hiding in a tiny
attic compartment with only a small hole to see the outside
world. Read the passage carefully. Then, in a well-written
essay, analyze both the shift that occurs at the fourth
paragraph and the rhetorical strategies that Jacobs uses
throughout to achieve her purpose.
