be for the AP Language and Composition Exam. No
outside sources or notes should be consulted. The
suggested time is 40 minutes.
The following excerpt from Harriet Ann Jacobs's Incidents
in the Life of a Slave Girl chronicles her time hiding in a tiny
attic compartment with only a small hole to see the outside
world. Read the passage carefully. Then, in a well-written
essay, analyze both the shift that occurs at the fourth
paragraph and the rhetorical strategies that Jacobs uses
throughout to achieve her purpose.
