By the time Roberto was ten, he knew that he wanted to save lives when he grew up. Roberto's father, on the other hand, had always hoped that his son would join the family carpentry business. Originally started by Roberto's great-grandfather, Roberto would carry the business into its fourth generation. In addition, he explained to Roberto that he couldn't be a doctor when he grew up, because medical school was too expensive. Still, Roberto couldn't help himself from reading books and articles about being a doctor. He knew that working with wood and hammers wasn't for him, but he was scared to admit it. Roberto didn't want to hurt his father, but he also didn't want to let go of his own dream.

It wasn't until eight years later, on the day after his high school graduation, that Roberto finally summoned the courage to again share his dream with his father. He went to his father's dusty workroom and saw him making a beautiful rocking chair. He walked up to his father and cleared his throat. "Dad?" he said nervously.

His father lifted his head and smiled. Roberto was uneasy at first, but he was soon telling his father the details of his future plans-high school, medical school, the hospital he dreamt about working for, and the free clinic he one day hoped to build. He also told his father about the scholarships he could apply for.

"Follow your dream, son," his father replied. "I know you'll make a great doctor."

Years later, Doctor Roberto would look back on this day and smile.
