one of the bob-whites, with its beak hooked bitterly to show it was dead. "Now you go on home, Granny!"
'I bound to go to town, mister," said Phoenix. "The time come around."
He gave another laugh, filling the whole landscape. "I know you old colored people! Wouldn't miss going to town to see Santa Claus."
He has a hard life and must overcome many obstacles, too.
He is wondering how he can help Phoenix achieve her goals.
He does not understand Phoenix or appreciate her quest.
He is Phoenix's grandson and is surprised to see her out and about.
