When the institution of internships first began, only the medical profession used interns. Doctors clearly needed practical application of their knowledge to learn the profession. By World War II, other professions started to take on interns. At that point, the government established criteria for legally using interns without paying them. The criteria included educating the intern in the business, benefiting the intern by doing so, and avoiding using the intern to fill someone else’s job, among other requirements. However, companies soon realized that they could bring in workers under the guise of internship and cut the bottom line by having interns work for free. Not only is this practice exploitive, it is illegal. But companies have repeatedly gotten away with it over the past decades because interns have been afraid to speak up for themselves. They were convinced that doing so would mean certain blacklisting in the industry. They were likely right. Which synonym could replace the word “free” in this paragraph
