Type: Short 5-paragraph expository essay

Education: 7th/8th grade

READ the information in the box below.

In the children’s book The Little Engine That Could, an engine succeeds in pulling a train over a mountain by repeating the words “I think I can.” The story is so well known and motivational that it has been used in many songs, films, speeches, and advertisements throughout popular culture.

THINK carefully about the following question. Is a positive attitude necessary for success?

WRITE an essay explaining whether a positive attitude helps a person be successful. Be sure to

• clearly state your controlling idea

• organize and develop your explanation effectively

• choose your words carefully

• use correct spelling, capitalization, punctuation, grammar, and sentences

At some point in our lives, many of us question the secret to success. Some may argue that the key to success is hard work, while others debate that it is setting goals or making plans. However, something that is often overlooked is one’s attitude. One’s attitude can not only impact the way you think, but it can also affect the way you act.

One’s self-image and attitude can drastically affect one’s life, either negatively or positively. All the events of one’s life are mirrored by one’s thoughts, beliefs, and attitudes; life is exactly how you picture it. Moreover, external factors do not determine one’s life, but our beliefs do. In fact, the greatest limitations are those we impose on ourselves; and thus, the greatest obstacle to success is a mental obstacle.

When I was younger, I was attempting to ride a bicycle for the first time. Thinking I wouldn’t be able to do it, I lost balance, fell, and tripped before I realized I could improve by changing my pessimistic attitude. Trying once more, I got up and tried riding it again. With my positive attitude, I was able to make significant improvements throughout the next few days. Not only did my positive attitude allow me to ride my bicycle, but I learned that my attitude affected my behavior.

Another instance of utilizing a positive attitude to achieve success is in the Hunger Games. The main character, Katniss, maintains a positive attitude throughout the games, despite significant hardships and losses, including the loss of a friend. By preserving her optimistic attitude, she gains enough self-confidence and motivation to ultimately survive the Hunger Games.

Ultimately, your attitude directly impacts the way you act and go about life. Whether you are a student, chef, engineer, or in any other profession, having a positive attitude can be used to increase motivation, focus, self-confidence, and self-esteem. Some may not realize it, but having a positive attitude could be the key to success.
