One such gift was a code book from a German ship magdeburg, a light cruiser that ran around island off the Finland. when Russian ships quickly bore down the cruiser the captain of the stranded ship immediately did what all naval officers were taught to do: he ordered his signalman to bring him the ships codebook so he could throw the book, wrapped in the lead covers into the sea. But before the signal man could deliver the book to his captain he was killed by a Russian guns when the Russians recovered his body they said it was the clutch in the code book in his arms.
