If you add "I want to go home," the little boy whispered sadly," that completely changes the meaning of a sentence. Or, "I want to go home," the angry boy shouted." also changes the mood/tone of a sentence in a different way. Tone and mood set the emotion for a story or poem, and that is why it is important.
