You and your friends are stranded on an island that is three miles long and one mile wide. The island is located in the South Pacific. This island is not on any map. No plane or ship passes it. A
warm-water current flows past the island. The highest elevation is a three hundred foot hill at the
north end of the island. A cave is in the hill. In the cave is a box. The box is in a puddle of water.
Inside the box is 500 pounds of wheat. The wheat is not wet. The box is waterproof. There is a
fresh water spring on the island. One-third of the island is covered with trees. The rest of the
island supports vegetation.
The transportation which you and your friends were on is wrecked and sunk in the deep
water. Nobody knows where you are. The last time you touched land was 500 miles away. Your
boat was blown off course by a storm and your radio went out before you could send a destress
call. Nobody there knew where you were going. Through a miracle, no one was hurt. You are as
well as you are right now.
The assignment: what are you and your team going to do to ensure your survival? Plan on being
rescued in 3 years!
This will be written in the journal provided.

The greatest gift the sumerians gave the world was the invention of writing. the sumerians were wealthy people. they needed some way to keep track of what they owned. they began drawing pictures. they used a reed as a pen. they drew on soft pieces of clay. the soft clay was then dried in the sun. the tablet became a permanent record. later, the sumerian drawings changed into wedge-shaped symbols. this kind of writing is called cuneiform. by putting symbols together, the sumerians could write entire sentences.
