After exercising, the boys went to the bath house to
clean up. Each boy had a strigil, a metal scraper to
remove the oil and dust, and also a sponge to wash
down. No gymnasium has been fully excavated in
Athens. There is a round bath house outside the
Dipylon Gate. A similar bath house forms part of the
gymnasium at Eretria on the island of Euboea. These
were furnished with hip baths. They had no integral
heating system and relied on braziers for heat.
