After buying a dress, Mathilde is still upset because she has no expe nsive jewelry to wear to the party. She borrows a diamond necklace fro m her wealthy friend. Mathilde get s home from the party and discovers the necklace is missing. (__1_) Pretty and charming Mathilde Loisel cries incessantly because was born middle-class and feels she was mea nt for a life that the wealthy live . Monsier Loisel gives Mathilde th e money to buy herself a dress for the ball. Ten years later, Mathild e meets Mme. Forestier while taking a walk. Mme. Forestier tells Mathi lde the original necklace was made out of paste. Mathilde’s husband s earches for the missing necklace, b ut never finds it, so they borrow t he money needed to buy a necklace e xactly like the one that was lost. Mathilde and her husband live like paupers and work hard for ten year s to repay the debt they created af ter buying a new necklace to give b ack to Mme. Forestier. Mathilde’s husband brings home an invitation t o a fancy party hoping to cheer his wife up, but the invitation makes her more upset because she has noth ing to wear.
