In the 1870s, bald eagle populations started to drop in the United States. Hunting and habitat loss caused the decrease. Later, the number of eagles continued to fall because of pesticide use. Pesticides weakened the eagles' eggs. Fewer eagles were born. But bird-watchers say that bald eagles are making a comeback. Hawk Mountain is a bird sanctuary in Pennsylvania. Bird watchers there reached a record number of bald eagle observations in 2010. They spotted 407 bald eagles during the year.
