Throughout the course of your studies, it will be necessary to read, understand and summarise pieces of text. For example, you may need to research information from a book or leaflet and then present your findings in YOUR OWN WORDS. Part of the skill of summarising is being able to identify the most important points made within the text. Read the following extract and pick out the MOST IMPORTANT POINT in each paragraph. There are 5 paragraphs. Once you have identified the main points list them as if you were preparing to write a summary. Extract from a press release produced by ExtraValue Foods, a national chain of food retailers. The national food retailer, ExtraValue Foods, announces plans to open a new hypermarket in Hometown. Read the excerpt from warriors don't cry. as we approached behind them, we could see only the clusters of white people that stretched for a distance of two blocks along the entire span of the school building. my mind could take in the sights and sounds only one by one: flashing cameras, voices shouting in my ears, men and women jostling each other, old people, young people, people running, uniformed police officers walking, men standing still, men and women waving their fists, and then the long line of uniformed soldiers carrying weapons just like in the war movies i had seen. which words create the mood in the excerpt? check all that apply.

The major was a little man with upturned mustaches. he had been in the war in libya and wore two wound-stripes. he said that if the thing went well he would see that i was decorated. i said i hoped it would go well but that he was too kind. i asked him if there was a big dugout where the drivers could stay and he sent a soldier to show me. i went with him and found the dugout, which was very good. the drivers were with it and i left them there. what effect does hemingway’s limited use of adjectives have? it slows down the narration by interrupting the action. it makes the few descriptive words he does use more vivid and forceful. it makes the narrator seem powerless and insincere. it prevents the readers from filling in the details with their own experiences.
