Both texts feature not only the natural unfairness of using laws or scale for the advantage of the strong but the truism of "Matthews Law" which effectively dictates that for those people who have a lot, more will come and for those who have little – they are the most likely to lose more. In both cases, the powerful people are becoming more powerful, and the systems being developed by them will structurally disenfranchise the people they are displacing. In "To Roosevelt", the poet starts to explore the theme using the words "you are the future invader" to identify America as the inevitable single power in the America’s. When he goes on to say "You think life is fire, that progress is eruption; where you put your bullet you put the future", Dario is building on the theme of the aggression that America is going to use to dominate. Dario is saying the values that Roosevelt represents is traditionalism and unchanging, rather than progressive and open-minded development. He is proposing that Roosevelt and therefore America sees violence as a tool of expansion. In "The Squatter and the Don" the theme emerges when it is clear that there is a supposed moral justification for displacing people with the words "all inside the law". This is making it clear that creating a legal structure that serves the powerful provides them with security from guilt for their actions. The further statement "in this easy way more land was taken from its legitimate owner". In this sentence it is clear that the author is maintaining that the legitimacy of residence is being successfully overtaken by legal action. This is further developed in the reference to this legal activity creating only tears, not blood as it would in the past through only violent action.
