PROJECT: WRITING A POEM Writing poetry is one of the most difficult undertakings in writing. Paying attention to what other poets have done can make the process much easier.

Here is your goal for this assignment:

Compose a short poem
Using some of the techniques of poetry you have studied in this unit, write a brief poem (8-10 lines). The poem may be iambic pentameter or free verse, rhymed or unrhymed. Beneath your poem, list the poetic devices that you used.

GIRL: What are you working on? BOY: I’m writing a poem, want to hear it? GIRL: Sure! BOY: Okay, here it goes… Birds like to fly, not to run. They go way up high in the sky, boy that must be fun! They soar with their wings, how cool it must be to do such wonderful things, lots of times better than you and me. GIRL: Why is that a poem? BOY: Because it rhymes! GIRL: There’s more to poetry then just rhyming. BOY: There is? GIRL: Yes, there’s meter, figurative language, and other sound devices like onomatopoeia. BOY: Oh! I guess I have a little to learn before I can write poetry well. GIRL: Yes, but at least you understand rhyme in case you decide to use that in your poetry. BOY: Yeah, that was pretty good, wasn’t it? Did you notice how wings and things rhymed? And high and sky… [fades out]

Read the following passage: he roamed from chamber to chamber with hurried, unequal, and objectless step. the pallor of his countenance had assumed, if possible, a more ghastly hue— but the luminousness of his eye had utterly gone out. the once occasional huskiness of his tone was heard no more; and a tremulous quaver, as if of extreme terror, habitually characterized his utterance. there were times, indeed, when i thought his unceasingly agitated mind was laboring with some oppressive secret, to divulge which he struggled for the necessary courage. which of the above ideas might be considered foreshadowing? he is wandering all over the chamber his skin tone is really pale his voice is quivering the narrator thinks he is laboring with an oppressive secret
