Look back at the collage you created to illustrate a symbol in the novel and to hint at one of the novel’s themes. Where does the symbol appear in the novel, and how is it described? What does it represent (if anything) to Cassie or to other characters in the novel? And what does the symbol suggest about the novel’s overall message or theme? Directions: Use the guidelines below to write your essay, after listing details that you could include in each paragraph.
Paragraph 1: Identify the symbol you chose for your collage, and explain where the symbol appears in the novel and how it is described. If the symbol is an object, also be sure to explain the role that the symbol plays in the scenes where it appears. Use the space below to jot down details about your symbol that you could include in your first paragraph. When you have four or five important details listed, open a new word processing document and write your first paragraph.
Paragraph 2: Focus on the second question in the prompt, explaining what the symbol represents to Cassie and the other characters in the novel. Use the space below to list details you might include in this section of your essay. Then, write your essay’s second paragraph.

Paragraph 3: Focus on the last question in the prompt. Identify one or more themes that the symbol might suggest or support, and explain how or why the symbol points toward those themes. This paragraph should describe the background of your collage. Use the space below to list details about the novel’s themes and their connection to the symbol you identified. Then write the third paragraph in your essay.
Paragraph 4: Summarize the main ideas in your essay in a couple sentences. Include a brief, general description of your symbol and remind readers of the theme or themes the symbol suggests.

The collage description:
This collage depicts the actions performed by the character Papa or David Logan in Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry by Mildred D. Taylor:
He was described as hardworking.
Papa worked on the railroad to keep their land.
He risked his life to stop people from shopping at the Wallace store.
He set the cotton fields on fire.
He values family and friends more than money.
Here’s the dialogue, I don’t know why I can’t add the dialogue within the collage so I just write below.

1. I asked him once why he had to go away, why the land was so important. He took my hand and said in his quiet way: 'Look out there, Cassie girl. All that belongs to you. You ain't never had to live on nobody's place but your own and long as I live and the family survives, you'll never have to.
2. You have to demand respect in this world, ain't nobody just gonna hand it to you. How you carry yourself, what you stand for - that's how you gain respect. But, little one, ain't nobody's respect worth more than your own. You understand that!'
3. "But that fig's got roots that run deep, and it belongs in that yard as much as that oak and walnut... It don't give up. It give up, it'll die. There's a lesson to be learned from that little tree, Cassie girl, 'cause we're like it. We keep doing what we got, and we don't give up. We can't."
