Ellie was watching an old lady walking with a cane a few feet away, when she dropped a twenty dollar bill out of her pocket on accident and did not notice. Ellie bent down and grabbed the money, and gently tapped the lady on the shoulder. The fragile lady glanced up sharply, and when she saw Ellie's hand outstretched, gave a questioning look. "M'aam, you dropped this." The old lady smiled brightly and reclaimed her money back. "Thank you m'aam, you would be surprised how many people would take the money and run. I dropped my dollar coin the other day and was trying to pick it up, and a homeless man grabbed it and ran. Thank you very much for returning this." Ellie, herself unfortunately homeless, living in a homeless shelter, nodded in sympathy at her and smiled. "Have a great day!" Ellie walked to her destination, a fast food restaraunt. She was quite hungry after searching for a job, and stood in line. She noticed the old lady she had encountered just a couple of minutes ago conversing with the cashier. When Ellie got to the front she ordered the cheapest thing on the menu, pizza. Anything would do when you're hungry. She grabbed the meager stash of cash from her backpack, and started to pay, but the young cashier, looking to be 18 like Ellie, looked at her odd. "Your grandma or something gave me extra cash to pay for your lunch, and said to tip whatever was left over. You're order is already payed for." Ellie glanced over at the lady, who was now in a booth, and was watching her with a merry twinkle in her eye. "Umm, ok thank you." The cashier nodded and moved on to the next person in line. Ellie grabbed her food and went to thank the old lady, but noticed she had already walked out the door. That was unexpected, Ellie thought, but she was just thankful that the kind stranger payed her meal without even knowing how much she really  needed it. Ellie decided, so it pays to be kind to strangers.
