The Perfect Cookie Angelique had been perfecting her grandmother's sugar cookie recipe for several years; she shared her grandmother's passion for baking and had many delightful memories of helping her in the kitchen. Angelique had been waiting all week for her mother to purchase the necessary ingredients so she could bake.
Finally, Saturday arrived. Angelique sprang out of bed early to ensure she had plenty of time to organize her ingredients, bake, and decorate the cookies. As soon as she organized the kitchen counter with the necessary mixing bowls, utensils, and ingredients, her younger brother, Maceo, came trotting in.
"What are you doing, Angelique?" Maceo asked quizzically.
"I am baking sugar cookies; it's grandmother's recipe," she replied without taking her eyes off the recipe.
"I want to help!" Maceo shouted with enthusiasm as he dashed to the bathroom, scrubbed his hands, and grabbed the stepstool.
"No way!" hissed Angelique. "You will destroy everything! Last time you dropped egg shells in the batter. The cookies you decorated had so much frosting they weren't even edible." Tears began to swell in Maceo's eyes as he stomped off to find Mom, and two minutes later, a red-faced Maceo stood next to Mom in the kitchen doorway.
"Is it possible for your brother to join you? He would thoroughly enjoy it and has promised to be a wonderful helper," Mom said calmly, but sternly.
"Fine, but if he ruins them, I'm throwing the cookies away!" Angelique replied in frustration. Maceo jumped up on his stool and immediately began rearranging the whisk, parchment paper, and confectioners' sugar. Angelique could feel her face redden; this was not the way she pictured her quiet morning in the kitchen.
As Angelique began sifting the flour, Maceo started to sing, and within minutes the two were mixing, singing, and laughing together. The siblings were exuberant; Angelique pointed and laughed at her brother who had flour on his face and butter in his hair.
When the cookies had cooled completely, they began to carefully decorate each one with lavender frosting and silver sprinkles. Maceo's face showed deep concentration as he gently shook the container of sprinkles delicately over each cookie, hoping he met Angelique's standards. Angelique smiled—the cookies were perfect, and to her surprise the morning had turned out to be more fun and memorable than she had imagined.

Read the sample student paragraph that addresses a counterclaim. some claim that the internet both invades and compromises one’s right to privacy. however, this is ridiculous. the internet is only as invasive as one allows it to be, particularly since there are laws to protect people’s privacy. exercising caution when supplying personal information online is the most vital step in protecting one’s privacy. any information you do not feel comfortable sharing online should not be shared, and sensitive information should only be provided to trusted organizations. additionally, some states have already enacted privacy laws that model the federal privacy act of 1974, ensuring that information collected for one purpose may not be used—or sold—for other purposes without first notifying the individual to whom the data belongs. the first and most important protector of an individual’s information is that individual. people whose personal information is not properly protected only have themselves to blame. what evidence weakens the counterclaim in this paragraph? the internet is only as invasive as one allows it to be. exercising caution is the best way to protect one’s privacy online. some states have already enacted online privacy laws. it is the individual’s fault when personal information is unprotected.
