How can I combine “American food traditions for Christmas Eve are more leaned towards roast turkey, ham, sweet potatoes, etc. But traditional Chinese foods are usually dumpling, huoshao, rice fish, etc. Which are two completely different kinds of foods. Amys parents invite her crushes family over for Christmas Eve dinner, making Amy scared Robert, her crush might judge her over the foods they’ll have and her family members poor American manners. However Amy’s mother is trying to teach her that it’s okay for them to have different traditions and she should be proud of her culture, as for her mother saying “you must be proud you are different” and “only have shame is to have shame”.

And

“In fish cheeks the mother doesn’t want Amy to feel like she needs to be somebody she’s not. She doesn’t want her daughter to feel the need to change just for some boy. Amy’s mother talks to her about how she could try and act American and different on the outside but inside she’ll always be Chinese as she says “but inside you must always be Chinese. You must be proud you are different” she wants amy to be happy with herself even though Amy doesn’t really understand it at the time”
