1. Esperanza and the residents of Mango Street endured and witnessed many adversities and changes: poverty, unstable homes, abuse, death, abandonment, identity, etc. However, at the end, Esperanza
states, “I write it (stories] down and Mango says goodbye sometimes. She (Mango) does not hold me
with both arms. She sets me free." (110). What does Esperanza mean by this quote? Why is this quote
