Read the passage about the life of Jackie Robinson. Jackie Robinson was born on January 31, 1919, in Cairo, Georgia. He was the youngest of five children and raised by a single mom in relative poverty. Jackie was very much inspired by his older brother Matthew, who won a silver medal in the 200-meter dash at the 1936 Olympic Games, to pursue his talent and passion for athletics. He attended John Muir High School and then went on to Pasadena Community College, where he played football, basketball, track, and baseball. During this time, he was named the region’s Most Valuable Player in baseball. From there, Jackie went on to the University of California, Los Angeles, where his time was cut short due to financial hardship.

After leaving the University of California, Jackie served in the United States Army. Fortunately, he never saw combat. However, during this time, he was arrested and court-martialed for refusing to move to the back of a segregated bus. Ultimately, he was acquitted of these charges and received an honorable discharge. It was after this discharge that Jackie began playing Major League Baseball.

Ead this excerpt from the introduction to wheels of change by sue macy. imagine a population imprisoned by their very clothing; the stiff corsets, heavy skirts, and voluminous petticoats that made it difficult to take a deep breath, let alone exercise. add to that the laws and social conventions that cemented a man's place as head of the household and holder of the purse strings. how suffocated women must have felt. and how liberated they must have been as they pedaled their wheels toward new horizons. why does the author include this excerpt?
