A farmer had a dog who used to wait by the roadside for vehicles to come. As soon as one came, he would run down the road, barking and trying to overtake the vehicle. One day the farmer’s neighbour asked the farmer “Do you think the dog is ever going to overtake those vehicles?” The farmer replied, “That is not what bothers me. What bothers me is what he would do if he ever caught one.”

Many people in life behave like that dog who is pursuing meaningless goals.

The Wise Man

Once there was a young boy named Thomas who loved his father very much. When problems bothered him, he would ask his father for help. Thomas believed his father could do anything. After coming home from school, he decided to talk to his dad. He found his father reading a book in the den. His father could see the puzzled look on his face. Thomas asked his dad, " How can I be successful in school." His dad smiled at his question. Then, he told Thomas a story his father once told him. It was about a wise man. Another boy long, long ago once asked the intelligent man a similar question. He said, "Meet me at the river." They both met at the river. The wise man threw the boy into the river. The young boy kept coming up for air, but the man would push him back down. When the young boy came back up, he took in a big gulp of air. The wise man asked the young boy, "When your head was in the water, what did you want the most?" The young boy said, "I wanted air." The wise man said, "That is what success is all about in life." When you want something deep within, you will get it. The boy smiled. He gave his father a big bear hug. Thomas told his father, "I will always keep this story close to my heart."
