The kitchen was dark, but Anna could see the dirty dishes
from their morning breakfast. She heard the television and
walked into the living room where Roberto was watching a
basketball game and eating a bag of chips. He looked up and
said, "I was hungry and couldn't wait for you to cook dinner.
Why must you work so much overtime?"
It was at 8 o'clock, and Anna was very tired and hungry, too.
Instead of answering his question, she put her hands on her
hips and asked, "Do you remember the tale of the Little Red
Hen?"
"No, I don't," he said. "Remember, I am not from this
country."
"Well," she replied, "there is something to be said about
those kinds of stories, so I will tell it to you.
"One day a little red hen found a grain of wheat. 'Who will
plant it?' she asked. 'Not l' said the duck. 'Not l' said the cow.
'Not l' said the dog. 'OK' she said, 'I will do it myself. And so,
she did.
"The wheat grew tall and finally was ready to harvest. 'Who
will cut it?' asked the hen. 'Not l' said the duck. 'Not l' said
the cow. 'Not l' said the dog. 'OK' she said, 'I will do it
myself.' And so, she did.
