Everything in the paragraph is a subtopic of the topic sentence. The requirements for a good topic sentence are very specific. The main clause will have as its subject the subject of the paragraph. In the predicate, a pointer or controlling idea is essential. What the pointer does is to indicate what the paragraph will say about the subject. Writers should get lots of practice.
