**Now it is time to read the LAST section of The Odyssey: Penelope's test. As you read this, think about how Odysseus has already tested Penelope to be sure she has been faithful to him and still loves him. Penelope, however, has a test of her own!

Directions: Read each item carefully and answer it completely

1. What has Athena done to Odysseus? Copy one sentence that shows this.

2. Using context clues, see if you can determine what "aloof" means. Explain why Odysseus is confused and disappointed by Penelope's reaction to him. How would you have expected Penelope to react after not seeing her husband for twenty years?

3. Find a metaphor Odysseus uses about Penelope near the bottom of page 821. Explain what he is saying.

4. Find and copy a sentence near the top of page on 822 that shows Penelope's hesitation. What is she hesitant about? Why?

5. Summarize the directions Penelope gives to Eurycleia about making a bed for Odysseus. There is a reason she goes into detail--you will see why later.

6. In lines 1570-1592 Odysseus expresses a very strong tone. Read the passage, identify the tone, list FOUR words from the passage that help establish the tone. Then, come up with two of your own words that are NOT in the passage, but have the connotation of the same tone as that in the passage. (Hint--your two words could be synonyms for two of the words you have already identified.)

7. Summarize what process Odysseus describes in the passage. Think what the trunk might symbolize. Explain how this develops the character of Odysseus.

8. Write one of the physical descriptions of Penelope after hearing Odysseus' rant (long, emotional, critical speech) What is the emotion she is feeling?

9. How does Penelope's test mirror that of her husband, Odysseus? How were they both deceptive? Were they wrong or right to do this? Explain.

10. What simile does Homer use (top of page 824) to illustrate how Odysseus feels? Is this effective? Why or why not?

11. What favor does Athena give to Odysseus to protect him? (See italics section)

12. Constructed response: Trace the emotions of both Odysseus and Penelope regarding their marriage over the last twenty years. How has the relationship come full circle?
