The Mighty Redwoods Redwood trees, also know as Sequoias, are the world's tallest trees, reaching an average height of 300 feet. There are two types of
redwoods native to the United States: Coast Redwoods (Sequola sempervirens) and Sierra Redwoods (Sequoiadendron giganteum). While the
two types are similar in some ways, they also differ in a number of ways.
Coast Redwoods and Sierra Redwoods are similar in very general aspects. Both types of redwoods are evergreen trees. Both have
reddish bark and, like many evergreens, they yield cones. Another similarity is that both types grow extremely tall. On average, redwoods are
about the height of a 30-story building
However, while Coast Redwoods and Sierra Redwoods grow to a similar height the Coast Redwoods tend to be thinner than Sierra
Redwoods. Coast Redwoods are usually about 12 to 16 feet in diameter, while some Sierra Redwoods reach an impressive 28 to 32 feet in
diameter
Another difference between the two types of trees relates to the environments in which they grow. Coast Redwoods are found near the
coast of the Pacific Ocean, from central California to southern Oregon, while Sierra Redwoods are found mainly in central California, primarily in
the Sierra Nevada mountain range Coast Redwoods, as their name suggests, grow in the foggy, rainy climate near the ocean and in coastal hills
at elevations up to around 3.000 feet. Sierra Redwoods do best in the drier inland climate at elevations ranging from 5,000 feet to 8,000 feet.
How are Coast Redwoods and Sierra Redwoods alike?
1. Both grow well in areas with a rainy climate
2. Both are evergreen trees that produce cones,
3. Both thrive at elevations of 5.000 feet and above.
4. Both have similar diameters and grow only in California.
