Jake Bryant played hockey for seven years. He was the goalie in an advanced youth hockey league in Colorado. During the last two years that Bryant played, he suffered five concussions. This forced him to retire from the sport at age 16. Hockey player Alexandra "Z" Karlis, age 17, was also sidelined by a concussion. She sustained a brain injury when a player on the opposing team blindsided her with an elbow to the head. Protecting kids from the long-term effects of concussions is the motivation behind Senate Bill 40, which Colorado recently signed into law.
