From A Kenyan Teen’s Discovery: Let There Be Lights to Save Lions by Nina Gregory
5 She has been studying the conflict between humans and lions, and her work led her to Richard. In one week, she monitored over 50 cases where lions attacked livestock. "It's a very, very serious problem," she says.

6 Her work studying the problem led her to Richard.

7 One night he was walking around with a flashlight and discovered the lions were scared of a moving light. A light went on inside him and an idea was born.

8 Three weeks and much tinkering later, Richard had invented a system of lights that flash around the cow shed, mimicking a human walking around with a flashlight. His system is made from broken flashlight parts and an indicator box from a motorcycle.

9 "The only thing I bought was a solar panel," which charges a battery that supplies power to the lights at night, Richard says. He calls the system Lion Lights.

The word “light” appears twice in the seventh paragraph. How is the meaning of the word in the first sentence different from the way the word is used in the second sentence of the paragraph?

Answer choices for the above question

A. In the first sentence the world “light” means something that is moving, and in the second sentence it means the beginnings of an idea.

B. In the first sentence the word “light” means illumination that makes things visible, and in the second sentence it means Richard shined the flashlight on himself.

C. In the first sentence the word “light” means the illumination that makes things visible, and in the second sentence it means the beginnings of an idea.

D. In the first sentence the word “light” means something that comes out of a flashlight, and in the second sentence it refers to the beginnings of an idea.
How does the relationship between the two meanings of the word “light” help you to better understand how the author uses the word to create and highlight meaning in the text?

Answer choices for the above question

A. The first meaning of the word “light” helps Richard to make a discovery about the lions and their behavior because he is using a flashlight. The meaning of the word in the second sentence refers to the idea that Richard had to solve a problem.

B. The meanings of the word “light” and the way they are used are related because in the first sentence “light” means actual illumination that Richard uses to see the lions in the darkness. In the second sentence it means the light Richard uses to see something within himself.

C. The meanings are related because one refers to the flashlight Richard uses while walking around at night, and the other indicates that Richard has a light within him, or an idea, to help him “see” a solution to his problem.

D. The meaning of the word “light” and the way the word is used in the first and second sentences is related. In the first sentence it means the actual illumination that makes things visible. In the second sentence it is used in a symbolic way to refer to a sudden idea. While not an actual light, it indicates that Richard has a light within him, or an idea, to help him “see” a solution.
