When you're young, most first words are "mama" or "papa." Do you ever wonder how we learned to say this? Our parents! They will try to get you to repeat it, and it will eventually work. When we start Pre-k or Kinder, they already expect us to know stuff from our parents who are truly teaching us. Most of what young kids learn while they're at school is just a preview of what their families have already taught them without even trying to. Another reason is that young children don't like to pay attention and can easily get distracted and start throwing tantrums whenever.
