Why eriko became a woman after his wifes's death?

Following the death of his wife, Eriko has then decided to become a woman. Not only does she defy gender roles but she then starts to become an instigator for her own personal decisions. Yoshimoto utilizes Eriko as a character to convey that gender roles do not define a person, but a person defines who they are.
