Dearest Mother! Guy de Maupassant’s “The Necklace”

After the events of Guy de Maupassant’s “The Necklace”, Madame Loisel’s mother-in-law writes a letter to her beloved son who she has heard has fallen on hard times! Though she knows that her son is far from wealthy, Momma Loisel does not understand - What happened?

Confused by her son’s current situation, Loisel’s mother asks her son to explain the misfortune that has fallen upon his house - Why is her son and daughter-in-law struggling for money? What has led them to their current situation?

Furthermore, how is her beloved daughter-in-law, Mathilde, handling the situation? How does her son, Mathilde’s husband, feel?

- Your Objective -

Using three clear pieces of evidence from Guy de Maupassant’s “The Necklace”, respond to Momma Loisel. Imagine that you are Monsieur Loisel, her son (the husband in the story). Think about the events of the story from his Point of View. Remember, “The Necklace” is written from Mathilda’s POV - the “Necklace” is a story told from the perspective of Third Person Limited.

This time, put yourself in Mr. Loisel’s shoes and vent to your mother; How do you think he feels?

Write a five paragraph, one to two page, creative letter as Mr. Loisel to your mother explaining what took place over the course of the story. Explain why you are now struggling for money. Do you think it is anyone’s fault? How do you feel about your new lifestyle? Explain how Mathilde is handling the situation. How do you feel about Mathilde? Have you learned anything about life from your new experience? Write a letter from Mr. Loisel’s Point of View!

- Requirements -

Your header should be in MLA format (see attached document for help)

Your Final Copy must be double-spaced and typed in 12 point “Times New Roman” font.

Your letter must feature three clear pieces of evidence from the text - either direct quotes or paraphrased examples.

The assignment is a formal writing assignment; proper grammar/spelling is required, no contractions and no modern slang (Remember, you are a man living in 18th Century France!)
