Throughout history both Africans and African-Americans have faced oppression and discrimination. Hughes emphasizes the events of the past and the present. Ancient Egypt is contrasted with modern America—the pyramids and the Woolworth Building. The extreme violence of racism is described in the atrocities committed in the Belgian Congo and in Hughes’ time with a lynching in Texas. So, individuals have suffered across time.
