The Great Depression was a period of economic slowdown in the 1930s which started with the Wall Street Crash of 1929. Families all over the country were affected by the Depression in different ways. One of the most well-known effects was mass migration, in particular by people from the Great Plains who were affected by the "Dust Bowl" (a period of severe dust storms that damaged the agriculture of the Plains). Migrants travelled all over the country looking for employment, which was often seasonal and irregular. Cities were also greatly affected, as unemployment was widespread, reaching 25% in 1932-33. This led to an increase in homelessness or precarious housing. Entire families often depended on charities and soup kitchens in order to survive. It also caused a change in political views, with Republicans losing their dominance in favour of the Democratic party.
