Read this: "the story of a young athlete who takes steroids and his life and future fall apart" what is the author's purpose? (entertain, inform, persuade or inspire? )

Hm. I am thinking that it could be persuade. The story does not seem meant to entertain, nor inform. Inspire doesn't seem right. I think it is persuading us not to take steroids. (I am pretty sure, so I would look into it further before going off of my answer)
