article : milan, italy (achieve3000, september 5, 2017). italy's government passed a law. it's meant to keep children healthy. it says children up to age 16 must get certain vaccines. these prevent 12 diseases. as of september 2017, parents must follow this law.

what if parents don't get their children vaccinated? they may have to pay money. the fines go up to 7,500 euros ($8,380). their children may not be allowed to go to school. parents may even lose their parental rights.

many people are against mandatory vaccination laws. they're speaking out. some argue that these laws take away their freedom. they say vaccinating children should be a parent's choice. others believe that vaccines might cause health problems.

but italy's leaders say the law is needed. history shows this. nearly 20 years ago, the country stopped making vaccines mandatory for schoolchildren. then, the number of children being vaccinated dropped. this caused infectious diseases to spread. many of these diseases are preventable with a vaccine. measles is one such disease. leaders say that measles killed 35 children across europe in 2016. leaders also point out that studies were done. they found that vaccines do not harm health.

beatrice lorenzin is a leader in italy. she praised the new law. she said it protects "our children against very serious diseases."
